MECHANICSBURG — Village council spent 47 minutes Monday night at the offices on N. Main Street debating whether a fourth stop sign near downtown would “restore order” or “start a civil war between the church parking lot and the people leaving Frosty’s.”

Council ultimately tabled the measure 4–2, directing the street committee to study traffic counts “when someone remembers who has the counter.”

Mayor Dale Hopson said the issue had “united the village in disagreement.” Residents who spoke during public comment included two people who wanted the sign, one who wanted a roundabout at Main and Sandusky, and one who asked if the meeting could end before the Indians baseball game on High Street.

“I’ve lived here 40 years,” said resident Patty Kern. “We used to wave. Now we brake-check each other like we’re on US-36 in a hurry to Urbana.”
