CHAMPAIGN COUNTY — Residents report receiving so many mailers about a proposed data center that the recycling bin has “become a secondary political party.”

Pro-development flyers promise jobs, tax base, and “the future.” Opposition flyers promise noise, water use, and “the future, but worse.”

Both sides urge residents to attend a meeting neither side can agree on the date of — possibly in Urbana, possibly “somewhere with parking,” which rules out half of Monument Square on a Saturday.

“I just want someone to mow the berm on U.S. 36,” said one Mechanicsburg voter. “Is that on the flyer?”

It was not.
